Our Story

Some companies are born out of necessity, and others are born out of inspiration. For Rick Avery, Front & Boundary was an idea years in the making.

Rick has spent his life appreciating and respecting the skills and craftsmanship of hands-on artisans. While he wasn’t a natural-born woodworker, he was inspired to learn the craft after spending years admiring the natural beauty of wood and seeing its limitless possibilities.

After graduating from college, he began his journey in the heart of American manufacturing, Cleveland, Ohio. Here, Rick learned the art of creating quality products and the value of craftsmanship. It was a journey deeply rooted in the belief that well-made items have the power to transform spaces and lives.

With a nagging desire to make a broader impact, Rick moved to Toledo with his wife and started a family. This transition was a pivotal moment in his life, and he began considering the possibility of starting his own business. However, he initially opted to remain in the corporate world, joining a real estate investment trust. During his time in this job, the seeds of his vision for Front & Boundary were planted.

His time in corporate America exposed him to the world of office furniture and sustainability, giving him a wealth of knowledge and experience that would later become the foundation of Front & Boundary. With a global perspective and a deep understanding of sustainable practices, he was inspired to create a brand that would not only produce exceptional furniture but also contribute to the Northwest Ohio community, support local jobs, and promote sustainability.

His journey to being an artisan and business owner was marked by a commitment to quality and an unwavering belief in the value of American craftsmanship. Rick is passionate about transforming workspaces into places of productivity, creativity, and inspiration.

Every custom desk crafted by Front & Boundary brings Rick’s vision to life and reflects his dedication to blending American-made craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.
